For manuscripts in American Methodist History Awarded once every four years by The General Commission on Archives and History of The United Methodist Church
Purpose
To encourage the writing of serious monographs in Methodist history, which includes studies of any antecedent bodies or offshoots of Methodism in the United States or its missions.
The Prize
The General Commission will provide up to $2,000 towards the publication of the winning manuscript. Publication is to be arranged by the author. The award must be claimed and spent within five years of notification.
Judging
Manuscripts entered in competition will be judged by a committee composed of professional United Methodist historians under the direction of the Commission. Entries will be judged on the basis of their quality of scholarship, style of writing, and contribution to the history of Methodism.
Announcement of Winner
The 2027 winner will be announced by the Commission in late 2027.
Deposit of Manuscripts
The Commission places one copy of each manuscript submitted in its archives. The author will retain control of permission to quote.
Reservations
The Commission reserves the right to withhold the prize if in the opinion of the judges no manuscript submitted merits the award. General Commission staff cannot compete.
Title Page
The title page of each manuscript entered in competition should bear these words: “Entered in competition for the Jesse Lee Prize offered by the General Commission on Archives and History of The United Methodist Church.”
Deadline
In order to be considered by the judges for the quadrennial prize awarded in fall of 2027, one electronic copy in Word or PDF of the manuscript must be submitted to the office of the Commission not later than July 1, 2027.
